The County of Hawai‘i Department of Environmental Management (DEM)ʻs RID-A-FRIDGE recycling event for Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Keaʻau Middle School is postponed due to potential impacts from Tropical Storm Hone. The event will be rescheduled to a yet-to-be-determined date.
Registration is reopened, and eligibility has been expanded to include Hilo zip code 96720.
DEM and Hawaiʻi Energy invite residents in zip codes 96720, 96749, 96778, and 96771 to recycle their old, working refrigerators or freezers and receive a $100 cash rebate per unit.
Requirements to participate in the event:
- Hawaiʻi Island resident of the following zip codes: 96720, 96749, 96778, and 96771.
- Must have an active Hawaiʻi Electric (HECO) account.
- Must register in advance. Download the registration application at: https://www.hawaiizerowaste.org/recycle/appliances/
- Email or drop off your completed registration application by 9/25/2024.

- Drop off: County of Hawaiʻi Department of Environmental Management office, 345 Kekūanāoʻa St, Suite 41
- You can also mail the form to 45 N. King Street, Ste 500, Honolulu, HI 96817 by 9/23/24.
- Refrigerator or freezer must work and measure 14 ft3 or larger.
- Must haul/unload your own appliance.
